3 Questions to Ask When Picking an Internet Package

Are you getting ready to sign up for Internet at your home, but there are many packages to pick from with various speeds? If so, it will help you ask yourself the following questions to help narrow down your selection.

1. How Many People Are in Your Home?

Always start by thinking about the number of people currently living in your home, because this is going to have a big impact on the speed package that you need for uninterrupted Internet use. The more people you have using the Internet simultaneously is going to require a package with faster speeds because there will simply be more demand on your home network.

2. How Do You Watch Television?

Do you watch television over a cable or satellite provider, or do you stream your television over the Internet? You may not realize how big of a demand streaming video has on your Internet connection. If you are streaming 4K content in your home, it requires a minimum of 25 Mbps speeds to do so. If you're only streaming HD content, that could require as little as 5Mbps.

However, your speed requirements quickly multiply when you have multiple people watching TV in your home at the same time. Four people watching 4K TV is going to require a connection with 100 Mbps at a minimum. If you do not have the speeds to get the quality you want, your streaming provider is going to lower the quality so that the video loads without buffering.

3. Do You Transfer Large Files?

Sometimes having the fastest speeds possible is important because you transfer large files frequently. Slow speed may be fine for those that just browse the Internet, but higher speeds can make a huge difference when you need to transfer several gigabytes of data. A faster Internet plan can be the difference between waiting minutes or hours for a file to finish transferring.

In addition, large file transfers can be something to consider when selecting a plan that has a data cap or not. If it is likely that you will exceed the data caps due to how much you download, then a plan with a higher data cap or unlimited data is going to be necessary to avoid overages and speed throttling.
